What is this?

We know that faculty are experts in their areas; we're experts in ours. The staff of Faculty Computing Services at Hofstra University are happy to sit with you and talk about your class and your goals for your class. We will bring you ideas for using technology to achieve your particular goals with your class. We work with you one-on-one to do this.

In cases where we can help a whole class or department grasp a concept, we will even create purpose-oriented applications, or assist you in programming your own applications. Application development is a service we offer only when it affects a large group of people (or the entire campus), but we'd love to talk to you about how we can help you.

FCS staff often have experience in teaching and/or advanced degrees, sometimes in instructional design. Our academic experience runs the gamut from English to Education, from Chemistry to Fine Art, from Video Production to Management, from Mathematics to the Computational Sciences. Many of us even have significant industry experience in software application development, UNIX/Linux system administration, and systems programming. It depends on the technical needs and goals of your class, yourself and ultimately your curriculum as it evolves over time. We believe in higher education and we want to help you teach and help your students learn.

To get there, we have dedicated the Faculty Support Center in McEwen 215 for your support. You can visit any time during open hours and receive one-on-one training on any particular teaching technology that you are interested in, or work with one of our staff on redesigning some part of your course using technology. That's what we do. That's why we're here.

Why would I use this?

If you have a specific goal in mind - you want to make sure students are keeping up with homework, for instance, or you want to introduce peer feedback into your class, or you want to give them a chance to review the material online, or anything that uses technology to help your class - you can consult with FCS' staff to find out what resources we have, how we can help, and how you can do what you want to do.

Who is using this?

We support hundreds of faculty per year through our consulting services. We'd love to help you too!

How do I use this?

You may already be used to calling 3-6894 or emailing us if you have a question. You can do the same thing to get consulting services! For the most convenient service, you may want to call ahead, explaining your idea and making an appointment. We'll put you together with a consultant who can work with you to accomplish your goals. You can also just drop in. We have full-time staff available during our open hours in the Faculty Support Center who can sit with you right then. But be aware that a consultant may put you in touch with another consultant who can better help you, depending on the nature of your project.

This wiki is full of resources to get you started on your own. Feel free to refine your idea, but we hope you let us help you implement it! And let us know how we're doing.
